It’s estimated that at any given time, about 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individual insects are flying, crawling, and burrowing around the planet. Invertebrates comprise more than 90% of Earth's animal species, and all but 10% of known invertebrates are insects (arthropods with three body segments, three pairs of jointed legs, and paired wings). “Worms that secrete bioluminescent fluids.” In my career as a National Park Service science writer, that’s not a phrase I ever expected to be researching-or writing an article about.īut why not? My recent conversation with biologist Tony Palmer illuminated the gap between the fundamental role of invertebrates in our ecosystems and their frequent lack of inclusion in wildlife conservation efforts-and NPS interpretation. Some species of lampyrid beetles (fireflies) are strongly luminescent in both sexes.-by Alice Wondrak Biel, Sonoran Desert Network On the other hand, Arachnocampa larvae, belonging to the same family, glow to attract preys. The Lampyridae larvae are believed to glow as a warning signal to predators. After mating the female generally douses her light and gets on with her egg laying business. The adult female glows to attract a male for mating. ![]() The beetle can switch its light on and off by increasing and decreasing the air (oxygen) supply to the luciferin layer.Īlthough it is the female glow-worm that emits the strongest light, all stages of this insect are luminescent to some degree, including the male beetles, larvae and eggs. Luciferin is contained in the last three abdominal segments of the female beetle and is backed by a reflector layer of minute crystals. Very little heat is produced and so it is a cold light. ![]() Nearly all the chemical energy of this reaction is converted into light. These insects glow through bioluminescence - a process in which a substance called luciferin (a layer of protein) breaks down when mixed with oxygen, creating the light. ![]() Glow-worms and fireflies belong to a family of beetles called the Lampyridae, deriving the name from their ability to emit light. KnowHow team explains: The glow-worm is not really a worm but a beetle. ![]()
